Living in Kampala

The City

Kampala is the capital city of Uganda, surrounded by Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Uganda, and Sudan. Kampala is located near the equator and is 1,180 meters above sea level giving it the pleasant weather that it enjoys all year round with a few rainy seasons.

A bustling metropolis sitting on over seven hills with a population of about 1.2 million people, Kampala is a city of contrasts with modern and colonial buildings on one hand to the scenic green hills and wetlands on the other hand. Lake Victoria (the second largest fresh water lake in the world) is a stone’s throw away from Kampala making it a popular location for water sports and fishing. English is the official language with Swahili and other Bantu languages spoken widely. The city is relatively safe compared to its neighboring countries and has a large established expatriate community.

Cost of living

The quality and cost of living in Kampala is favorable compared to other major cities in Africa. Kampala has in the recent decade seen a booming construction sector with several homes being built within and outside the city. However, the city’s mainly residential areas still remain peaceful and green. The increase in the number of expatriates moving to Kampala has also seen an increase in accommodation from large style villas and bungalows with elaborate gardens to furnished apartments that come with most amenities already included.

Health Care

The national referral hospital, Mulago Hospital is located in Kampala. There are other private hospitals and clinics that cater to the expatriate community and are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Private clinics also accept medical insurance for expatriates and their families.

Climate

Because of its high altitude and location near the equator, Kampala boasts of pleasant weather all year round with two rainy seasons, the first during March and May and the second during the months of September and November.
